#Net2Van #HootUp – Social Media Success with HootSuite
Being a social media enthusiast, my interest was piqued when I heard about this Social Media Surgery event!
So, what exactly is a Social Media Surgery?
A social media surgery is an informal gathering of people who want to learn how to use the web to communicate, campaign or collaborate. Surgeries are deliberately relaxed. No presentations, no jargon, noone telling people what they think they should know.
This social media surgery was also a “HootUp” (a community meetup for HootSuite users). It was held at the HootSuite HQ last week, and the “surgeons” for the evening were knowledgeable community managers from HootSuite. The “patients” (myself included) were representatives from various local non-profit organizations.
The evening began with session sign-ups, to arrange for “patients” to sit down in 1-on-1 hands-on sessions with the “surgeons”. The “surgeon” I was assigned to was Elaiza (@ElaizaDatar).
Elaiza started by asking some questions about the project I had brought to discuss – a social media strategy for the online magazine I am a volunteer contributor for (Hello Vancity). She offered some great tips on cross-promoting content, searching for leads with geotagging (via HootSuite), suggested content types to share, and also went on to share some general pointers for social media success. Thanks Elaiza – I will be discussing these tips with James to see what we can do to better the social media strategy for Hello Vancity!
In between & after the sessions, I met and chatted with other “patients” & the friendly HootSuite staff. It was a fun and informal night of learning, with lots of interesting social media-related discussions! Thanks Net2Van and HootSuite for hosting this neat social media surgery event!
