This Christmas Eve, pb & I wanted to celebrate with a different type of Christmas dinner – a deviation from the usual turkey dinner. We had both heard about Guu Richmond‘s unique 6-course Christmas dinner for 2 (available on Dec 24th & 25th), so we decided to give that a try!
1st course: Octopus Ceviche
Octopus, shrimp, and assorted greens in a bed of onions. I’m not usually a fan of onions, but this cold starter was a refreshing opener for our 6-course meal! Our server also threw in a mini bowl of cold veggies, on the house.
2nd course: Mussel Spinach Potage Soup
The first thing that struck me about this dish was that it was green in colour! The soup was thick & creamy, very rich & flavourful in taste. The mussels were fresh & chewy, a good pairing with the potato soup.
3rd course: Sashimi & Veggie Bagna Càuda
This was quite an interesting dish. The small receptacle held a buttery garlic broth – the dip for an assortment of sashimi & veggies. We were instructed to dip the veggies, but to let the sashimi soak for a little longer in the broth while dipping. For the veggies, the dip merely provided a little extra taste, not particularly noticeable. For the sashimi however, the flavour of the boiling buttery garlic broth permeated the raw seafood & partially cooked the pieces – resulting in very flavourful fish and shrimp!
4th course: Assorted Sushi Tree
A gorgeous & colorful assortment of sushi, set up to resemble a Christmas tree! The rolls were made of rice, cream cheese, shrimp & cucumber, and topped with tuna, scallop & avocado. There were also 2 tiny tempura potato stars atop the tree! Cute, delicious, and very fresh.
5th course: Roasted Teriyaki Chicken
This chicken dish was amazing! Roasted, topped with onions & mushrooms, and glazed with teriyaki sauce. The meat was tender & very juicy! It came with a scoop of mashed potatoes – also very rich in taste. My only gripe? This portion was for 2 people to share! It was so good that both pb & I were yearning for more…
6th course: Iced Matcha Creme Brûlée
The 6th & final course was a decadent dessert – Iced Matcha Creme Brûlée! The matcha ice cream came served with a slightly burnt top, drizzled with chocolate & raspberry sauce, and topped with a dollop of whipped cream. A very delightful finish to our Christmas Eve dinner!
